Shopko and Pamida are merging. Shopko says they plan to convert existing Pamida stores to Shopko Hometown stores during the coming year. As many as 150 unemployed people in the City of Milwaukee will be able to get a job as urban farmers under a new deal approved by the city's Common Council. The Biz Times writes:
Growing Power, Inc. has been awarded $425,000 to build 150 hoop house gardens on vacant land within the city. The farms will be tended by urban farmers, creating 150 new jobs that will be filled by unemployed people in Milwaukee.
The paper also writes that the grant money comes from federal Housing and Urban Development funding.

A Madison judge has halted implementation of the Legislatively approved Budget-Repair bill, and while no one is saying anything yet, the judicial action could very well lead to the loss of thousands of jobs in Wisconsin. Governor Walker's budget-repair bill (and subsequent budget bill) were described as job-saving measures by the administration, but publicly villified by union members from inside and outside of Wisconsin. The most notable protests were in Madison, where school teachers were so upset they shut down the schools for several days. Now that the NFL lockout is official, the worrying begins for business owners who rely - at least in part - on the League for their revenues. Governor Walker this morning signed the Budget Repair Bill, and immediately rescinded lay-off notices that had been sent out to more than 1500 state workers. Thousands more had faced lay-offs if the bill hadn't been approved. Despite their new-found job security, opponents of the bill say they plan to stage another protest on Saturday at the State Capitol in Madison.

The Assembly and the Senate have now both passed a bill that will allow trendy Department Store chain Van Maur to open a store in the Town of Brookfield. Supporters say it will bring hundreds of construction jobs, and about 100 permanent jobs. There are critics - including the City of Brookfield Mayor, who had wanted the store to open at Brookfield Square mall in the City of Brookfield. Now, the Journal Sentinel is reporting that Van Maur would have preferred to be at the Mall, but that Boston Store used their veto power to prevent it.

Economic concerns have led to the Cray Corporation to decide not to move ahead with plans to expand their campus in Chippewa Falls. A discussed 36-million dollar expansion would have added about 100 jobs. The Eau Claire Leader Telegram quotes Chippewa Falls city planner Jayson Smith as saying "the company continues to look at options and alternatives." Milwaukee-based Manpower is out with its quarterly report on the hiring market - and it has some unexpected bright news, at least locally. According to the report, Milwaukee industry leaders are among the most likely in the country to hire during the next quarter. 18% of the Milwaukee employers surveyed say they plan to add staff during the final quarter of 2010. 7% expect to cut back. A Wisconsin think-tank is out with a report on this Labor Day - detailing the stark reality of Wisconsin's job outlook. According to the report, Wisconsin has lost more than 155,000 jobs since the start of the recession in December, 2007. Aurora Health Care this week announced they plan to open their new hospital in Grafton by November 1, which is slightly ahead of schedule. The March adjusted unemployment rate rose to 8.8%, up just a tick from the February rate (8.7%). However, the state did add jobs during March - 6,700 in all. Wisconsin lost more than 10,000 construction jobs between February, 2009 and February, 2010, according to a study released this week by the Associated General Contractors of America. The report found that only ten metropolitan areas added construction jobs during the time period. There was some good news in the report - as Eau Claire was one of the ten areas that added jobs; in fact it was the area that added the most jobs.

It's unclear at this point how many jobs it will mean, but a national retail mattress chain is expanding into Wisconsin. Houston-based Mattress Firm opened a store recently in Pleasant Prairie, and has plans for 9 more stores in the Madison and Milwaukee area. Company plans include a store in Brookfield opening next month, and one in West Allis opening in May. The plans call for at least two stores in and around Madison.

Wisconsin's Unemployment Rate rose in November, according to figures released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The statewide unemployment rate in Wisconsin hit 7.8%, up from 5.8% in November of 2008. The metro-Milwaukee area unemployment rate increased to 8.4% in November. According to the Bureau, unemployment rose in all 372 metropolitan areas in the United States.
